Some states have a consumer protection law (Maine does). A quick email to the attorney general's office explaining what happened here would resolve the "no returns" BS if it had happened here, as the AG's office would immediately send the retailer a "polite" letter explaining the law. They also provide a downloadable form with a similar explanation of the law you can present to the retailer.
I used their services once when my (former) heating oil dealer tried to shaft me out of oil I had prepurchased after the cost of heating oil doubled that winter. I didn't get the oil, but at least I got a full refund.
Frye's pulled out of Maine over a decade ago. I never set foot in their shop. Even back then, they didn't have a good reputation.
