It's like a dungeon, in space!
Dec. 19th, 2002 10:18 pmOnly, it's on a planet! And they're not orcs, they're BAD MEN.
Started a Traveller campaign today, sort of. We finished characters and planned our assault on our first objective, but everyone had to leave early so we didn't get far.
The (back)story starts in the year 4089 or so, when two honors student/jock types from different planets went to university on Yavin. They both joined the marines upon graduation through the OTC, and both went on to stellar careers, earning the highest honors granted by the Yukal Sector Marines.
"Joker", a techy and tactics type, served briefly with a psi-core recruit, "Cukoo", who was called back midway through the term of duty, but kept in touch. "Overkill", a demolitions expert, commanded a badly outnumbered marine detachment in the successful defence of imperial citizens on the planet of Somalia, and gained the loyalty of a somewhat sneaky Vargyr local, "Spot".
Serving with a former mercenary opened his eyes to the amount of money to be made out in the world if he left the military, so the four of them -- of all the people they contacted, the only ones who were prepared to take the risk -- travelled to the outlands colony of Trias to set up shop as a merc unit.
Unfortunately, they lacked several things to make a good team. First was a truly focused technical person. Second was a ship. Third was a job.
The second and third took care of themselves quickly enough, as a desperate archaeologist needed a team to reclaim his dig and his friends from pirates, and offered salvage rights to the pirates' Modular Cutter in payment. After demanding medical coverage and the rights to *all* the pirates' equipment, AKI Incorporated took on its first job.
By going through re-entry on the dark side of the planet, then trekking overland from just over the horizon, the team managed to recon the objective unobserved. The plan was for Cukoo to teleport into the unoccupied Cutter and secure it and its weapons, while Spot made her way into a flanking position to catch the guards in a crossfire, whereupon Spot, Overkill, and Joker would fire on the guards from long range using telescopic night-vision sights, neutralizing the visible enemy forces before they could respond, then picking off any other pirates as they came into view.
(of course, we can't meet again to carry out this plan until January 7th) which we did
