Tonight was Lance's Tuesday D+D game. After achieving immortality in the last game, the party was wiped out by a trio of kobolds.

The attempts to use the newly granted 'control weather' powers to slow down the three presumed enemies approaching the village failed -- the worgs they were riding ran off, but the robed hooded figures continued on undaunted.

The party gated back to town and held a perfunctory trial for the two prisoners taken in the original invasion attempt, then converted them to good (and the cause of defending the valley) and set them up as the new Town Guard. They then began planning the defense of the town... but before they'd gotten past the planning stage, the new town guard announced that the three strangers had reached the outskirts and were demanding to speak to the mayor.

So, a bit drained by fighting their way to the Hall of Heroes only an hour before, the party rode proudly out to defend the town. The hooded figures demanded to speak to the Lord Mayor, naming the invading evil priest the party had killed. The party informed them that they had the wrong town and should go away. The leader then said, in draconic, 'kill them'. Half the party spoke draconic, and warned the others. Battle was joined.

The figures stripped off their cloaks, revealing three largish white kobolds. The leader drew his sword and challenged the samurai to single combat, which was accepted. The two in back threw a total of 18 shurikens at the monk, hitting once... then the party's mage fireballed the other two kobolds, dropping one but failing to even touch the other as it nimbly rolled out of the way. The monk fired a few arrows, mostly missing. The druid set his dire wolverine on the remaining ancillary kobold (as the samurai had warned everyone not to interfere in his single combats, or he'd have to slay them too). The shaman stood around being useless and not doing a damn thing.

The fight went on for a bit with the samurai and the wolverine mauling their respective opponents, and the others trying hard but accomplishing nothing... and then, almost simultaneously, both the wolverine and the samurai were slain. The two remaining kobolds focused on the monk, who was holding her own, and the mage fireballed the three of them... and all three rolled out of the way, so the only person the fireball hit was the (now extremely charred corpse of the) samurai. The druid, now in leopard form pounced on the weaker kobold as it fought the monk...

And victory! The lead kobold teleported away with a ninja smoke bomb! The weaker kobold tried to follow suit, but was taken down by a last bite from the leopard druid, who then proceeded to devour and mutilate and otherwise thoroughly slay the corpse in revenge for his wolverine.

So then, the remaining members of the party tried to track down the last ninja half-dragon kobold (the half dragon bit being obvious from (a) their immunity to cold, (b) their white coloration, (c) their enormous strength, (d) their ability to breath cold!) before he could ransack the town. This attempt failed, as the shaman was taken down by a poisoned crossbow bolt as they entered the town.

The druid and the monk stashed the shaman for safety in the inn (the nearest building) and tried to track the ninja across the rooftops, while the mage retreated to the safety of the church, where the population of the town was hiding. Neither of them found any sign of the ninja, while the ninja continued to take the occasional potshot at them, wounding the monk badly. So they retrieved the shaman and, using a table (and tablecloth) for cover, scurried across town to the church to make their final stand.

Even as they entered the church, the mage shouted a warning from the belltower, and was then downed by a poisoned crossbow bolt from the ninja assassin, who appeared in the street behind them, running full out for the door. They shut the doors in time, and the monk raced up to the belltower to check on the mage (and keep lookout) while the druid tried to calm the panicked populace and looked around to make SURE the stealthy enemy hadn't found some way inside.

The monk spotted the ninja on the roof, and fired a couple arrows at it, hitting it... then it whipped out a scroll of darkness and covered the belltower. Down below, a green mist started spreading into the church, leading the druid (who recognized it as harmless smoke) to start looking around with detect magic while the population fled. That left the druid in a perfect position to watch the ninja half dragon kobold sneak in through a window downstairs... and from hiding, he launched his assault!

Of course, being pathetic in his natural form, the druid's surprise sling bolt attack failed to do anything but draw nine shuriken as return fire... four hit, all poisoned, but the ratling's incredibly strong constitution and ratling resistance to poison left him alive, but badly weakened. Since he was already out of spells and wild-shapes, leaving him with no credible attacks, he turned and ran, hoping to make the portal back to the hall of heroes before the ninja could finish him off.

The monk then came down the stairs, and delayed the ninja just long enough for the druid to flee through the portal before being gutted. The ninja then killed the rest of the party (who were unconscious but stable), murdered the mayor, slaughtered the few townsfolk that attempted to resist, and burned down the town, dooming the populace to a not-all-that-slow death in the cold. Then he returned to his dark master, and reported success.

The druid, who had oh-so-just-barely survived the poison (with 1 con and 4 hp left), healed himself the next morning, then left the vale in the shape of a hawk, never to return.

Evil was triumphant.

last week next week (different game)

I was the sole survivor... escaping with 5000 gold and a vastly extended lifespan, which for a ratling (average life expectancy: 20 years) is very important. The campaign's still over, though.
