Since I more-or-less finished Minish Cap, I needed to get a new game-boy game to play on the bus (or the toilet, or etc). I decided that since I'd really enjoyed the game-boy versions of the Pokemon and Yu Gi Oh trading card games, that something along those lines might be the best choice.
Now, I'd heard about the Shaman King card game (and even bought a starter to try it out), and it seemed weird and different enough that I'd have to play it against an AI (or another player) to even know if I liked it -- just like Yu Gi Oh and Pokemon TCG. Unfortunately, the card game is an adaptation of an anime instead of the other way around, so the game boy shaman king games have nothing to do with it and are instead directly based off the anime. I think there's one fighting game and one (bad) pokemon clone.
But there was Duel Masters. Duel Masters is sort of like Wizard's answer to Yu Gi Oh -- it's Magic the Gathering with all the power stats of the monsters multiplied by 1000, and other rules changes to make it more structured and less confusing, and much much much more creature dependant. Sure, the 'light' civilization is yellow instead of white, but it's quite obviously the same idea.
Anyway, the game-boy version of Duel Masters is pretty fun, and the simplified rule set (in particular, the lack of instants and activated abilities) makes it a lot easier to play with a controller against an AI. In fact, it reminds me of a magic-inflected 'YuGiOh Sacred Cards', which used simplified YuGiOh rules to make it play better as a game-boy game.
It sort of makes me wonder if the computerized version was the whole point of coming up with Duel Masters in the first place.
