Sell! Sell!
Dec. 20th, 2004 10:15 amLast Friday we had a session of the GURPS Neverwhere game, on schedule. I didn't get around to writing it up until now, because I spent the weekend with family. Which I'll go into later.
The session was kind of short anyway... I'll try to write down what I remember.
After a week spent doing their own thing, Don called Charlie and John over to his lab so that they could try on the armor he'd made for them. His lab was a bit of a mess, as the alchemical process he'd had what-was-no-longer-Enochin doing had exploded the day before... leaving him with 125 doses of powerful healing unguent, at least.
The armor was invisible and designed to be worn over clothing -- which made the clothing underneath look wrinkled and unkempt, but it was better than going around in *visible* full plate. As they were trying it on, and discovering that it needed to be adjusted, Charlie's house was attacked.
A green fireball annihilated his barn, and lightning bolt after lightning bolt streaked down at his house -- which was protected by all the wards, formerly securing the 'pinions', that he'd stored in his house. Since his house was also a place of power, they were protecting it now. He went outside, and the clouds seemed to glower at him... he tried to see through them to see if someone or something was hiding behind them, but saw nothing but an incredible array of lightning waiting to rain down.
Fearing the lightning, he summoned a spirit to set up a lightning rod over Don's lab, but it was struck by lightning en-route and killed. So they all ran underground, and cowered there with most of the rest of the town, as Athens was flattened by five minutes of spasmodic blasts of magical lightning. Most of the town was underground, at least, but there were a few buildings on the surface. Or at least, there had been before the storm.
While searching through the wreckage for survivors, they found a strange-looking rat creature, dead under a car. Don used the leg of his not-yet-completed mech-suit (his lab and charlie's house were the only two buildings to survive) to tip the car over, and they examined the body. While doing that, the Marquis arrived and told them that the creature was from *his* world, and was one of the reasons that he'd left -- they were really powerful (although it would have taken multiple of them to summon the storm) and usually were immune to bad luck like having a car fall on him. Charlie explained the luck-distorting properties of the talismans he had in his house, which seemed to be the cause of the thing's demise.
This was not a good situation, though. Charlie was pretty sure the attack hadn't been aimed at him, since he'd gone outside during it, and the clouds had seemed to see him, but had kept attacking his house, and the Marquis was pretty sure it wasn't a rescue attempt since the rats would never work with a Kit (or with anyone else not of their same species). So it had to be something else in the house that they were after.
Looking through the house, Charlie found everything magical that he'd ever owned in any world, somehow transported to various cupboards and such. None of it screamed 'target' -- well, except maybe the assortment of souls in jars -- so he decided he'd sell it all. He'd convert it into precious gems, and let some foolish buyer attract the assassination attempts. The Marquis knew just the place, but warned them that they'd need protection from glamours and compulsions if they didn't want to get ripped off.
Charlie meditated on a way to communicate with the trapped souls, who were obviously all mages. Probably mages wandering around not knowing that their souls were elsewhere, or at least not that they were in someone else's possession. The spirits taught him to search for answers in other peoples' minds, so he went to work interrogating the mages' memories for spells they could cast to protect against mental magic.
The first he came across used Great Wish to do everything. NOT a good person to piss off by binding him to do your bidding -- the searching was secret, but commanding them to cast the spell would not be. Eventually, though, he found a soul he recognized -- the person from whom he'd originally bought all the soul jars, still alive in this world, who (upon further interrogation) would be willing to sell amulets that would nullify *all* magic, offering complete protection. And, he was on the way to the bazaar.
So they gathered up their things, and went to meet him. He was nervous about being found out as a mage, but rather amiable overall, and didn't charge *that* much for his services (he asked for the sun and the moon, but settled for the sun, a sample of blood from John's pet, and a jar of poisonous gas). After receiving the antimagic amulets, as well as some lesser protection against magic effects in case they didn't want to go that far, they left on good terms and headed for the bazaar.
