I decided to waste most of the day today driving out to the Snoqualmie Tunnel again. It's a two-and-a-half mile long straight, unlit tunnel, out in Snoqualmie Pass, that you can walk through. I think you're supposed to take a flashlight, but I didn't bother, since the whole point is being surrounded by darkness... well, except for the light at the end of the tunnel, of course.

This time, I kind of cheated, accidentally -- I had my GBA-SP with me, and the backlight from its screen was enough light to see by. I didn't use it much, though -- pretty much only to check out the scary dark alcoves that kept looming up in the section where the tunnel was still kind of lit.

On the way back, two things happened. The first was that that light at the end of the tunnel seemed a lot closer than I thought it should be... and oranger. And (even through my headphones) I started to hear what sounded like tribal chanting and the shuffle of some procession... the reality turned out to be almost as strange, though -- a train. A wagon train. Drawn by horses. I managed not to get run over, as they had plenty of lights, and saw me in time. I did step in horse dung later on, though. *sigh*

The second was that after the horses passed, they blocked out the light from behind me that had been illuminating the passage (the bright side is the far end, so walking up you're blinded by the light, and walking back you can see) and it was just totally dark -- I couldn't even see the light at the dim end, even though it was a fifteen by twenty foot opening to daylight, only a mile or so away. I wouldn't have expected things to get too faint to see that quickly.

Anyway, it'll probably be another five years before I do *that* again. The tunnel's just too damn long -- a twisty tunnel maybe half a mile long could be just as dark in the middle without being so godawful boring in the start and end parts where you can see.

Also, a brain teaser from [livejournal.com profile] spengler. It took me a while to get it. The sequence that finally did it was '2 4 4 4 4 = 0' followed by '2 5 5 6 2 = 8'.

Supposedly, the smarter you are the longer it takes you to solve it, and we're talking months or years, according to its little blurb. I feel so stupid now.
