Oct. 27th, 2002 06:49 pmTonight was Tom's game, playing Return to the Temple of Elemental Evil. We fought some stuff, and some more stuff, and some more stuff, and some MORE stuff, and then ran away.
Last session ended with a vampire kicking the party's butt. As it turned out, the party was kicking his butt too, and the darkness wasn't meant to seal our fate, but to cover his escape.
Marcus' daylight let the party see him going through the door in gaseous form, but they were pretty sure he hadn't been forced gaseous, which meant he'd be back, fully healed, in a manner of minutes rather than hours. So after dispelling Guinsette's domination (after she started attacking Marcus) and restoring Xaod's lost levels, they followed, only to be attacked by an invisible assassin. Two, actually.
Little did the hapless assassins know that we'd come prepared to fight invisible creatures. Marcus spotted them with See Invisible, Bella cast invisibility purge to let the rest of us see them, then Marcus webbed them and Xaod ran after them (with his ring of Free Action) and cut them to ribbons.
Only they refused to stay dead -- they kept feigning death, then getting back up, and four huge elementals appeared out of nowhere in a part of the dungeon the party had already cleared to support them, which kept Xaod from coup-de-gracing them. The female assassin was burned to a crips by collateral damage from the fireballs Marcus flung at the elementals (unable to evade the damage while pretending to be dead), but the male got away, or at least we never found his body after last seeing it being pummeled by irate elementals.
While fighting the elementals, Marcus threw a fit that the others hadn't chased down the vampire while he and Xaod took care of the assassins... ignoring the fact that both he and Xaod would have been DEAD had the rest of the party not stayed to support them, since the elementals were quite large and nasty. But in due time the elementals were dispatched, and the party turned to go after the vampire again, through the secret door Darien had located just before the assassin attack, only to be attacked by a priestess.
They ran after her, and inflicted quite a bit of damage (more than 50 points), but she managed to get past the fighters trying to block her path and cast a 'Wall of Stone'. Since the party lacked any way of getting past a wall of stone quickly or quietly, they decided to leave it as a barrier against reinforcements and finish off the damn vampire.
The vampire's coffin was cleverly hidden, and required falling into a spiked pit to get to it (unless one was gaseous), but three of the party were flying and/or spider-climbing and smashed his sarcophagus and staked him, using magic missiles and spring attacks to stay out of range of his weapons and gaze. That done, they decided to go back to the secret hiding place and rest.
On the way, they ran into the metal-legged troglodyte priest with his normal escort of ogres, searching the room of the priest that had helped them, after torturing him to death. This time they held nothing back, and there were no survivors... but that used up the last of their spells, with the clerics not even able to heal the warriors.
They went to check their secret hiding place, hoping that the torture had just occured (since they'd only been out of their room for about an hour) and that word hadn't had time to spread, but it was too late -- the door was trapped, and trying to hide behind it was obviously suicidal. Mepechu suggested retreating to the outer ring, which Marcus agreed to, only suggested retreating to the nearby village of Raster to trade for several key spells, namely 'see invisible' and 'rope trick'.
So that was done. Mepechu found her wolf companion Piko, but the horses he was supposed to be guarding were missing... and he looked suspiciously well fed. None of them were particularly special or expensive horses, though, so there were no hard feelings. The party decided to hallow a random stretch of wilderness to rest, and approach Raster in the morning.
