Random things
Apr. 8th, 2004 12:02 pmNinja Gaiden is hard, although I knew that before I bought it. It's also prettier than I expected, and has a hideously stupid and frustrating camera that seems to go out of its way to make sure you can't see the enemy.
And for some reason, instead of letting the right thumbstick manually aim the camera like every other game, it automatically puts you into 'stand there and die while in first person' mode where you can't do anything and your field of view narrows and zooms in. Joy.
It also like to auto-aim your attacks at the wrong target. I have to wonder just how much of the difficulty is from the camera and the controls... when I'm playing it, I spend most of my time either trying to use the right trigger to find the enemy (it sets the camera behind your ninja, gradually, kinda, after a delay) or just lashing out at random and hoping I hit something offscreen.
And yet it got all kinds of praise and high ratings from everyone, with not even a peep about the hideous camera. Are game reviewers masochists or something?
Yesterday, I stopped by a card shop to get some boxes to store magic cards in. I've been using a mixture of three-ring binders and 'big loose piles', and thought the cute little card boxes might work better. The ones they sold are a bit too tight of a fit to be really convenient to look through, though, and use really thick cardboard that wastes a lot of space. Pfeh.
I also picked up a bunch of commons I was missing while I was there. They were horribly overpriced, but still dirt cheap. }:P Most importantly, I got the Myrs I was missing (iron and silver), since you can never have too many mana elves.
A couple weeks ago, Tom told us that he wouldn't be able to play 'the Sunday after next' because he had a school play. Just today, he sent e-mail saying he wouldn't be able to play this Sunday, as he'd suddenly realized it was Easter.
"Um, didn't you already cancel, for a school play?" we asked. "No, the school play is the NEXT game session." Apparently, when he said 'the Sunday after next' he meant 'four Sundays from now, the scheduled Sunday game session after next'.
"We'll just play on Saturday, if that's okay with everyone." Well, not in general. It looks like we might end up playing Saturday the 24th, although several people haven't chimed in yet with when they're available.
