Bandits and Zombie and Stuff
Mar. 14th, 2004 06:38 pmToday we had a session of Tom's anime-themed D+D game. We fought some bandits, and some zombies, and some wizards. Or rather, got repulsed by some wizards and were reduced to throwing rocks.
After some argument ("He said we could take his armor if we freed his soul." "No he didn't." "I asked him if we could have his armor, and he said 'clear out the room of the dead'. There were some words in between but they aren't important." "He was answering me when I asked how to free his soul!") the party dug up the golden armor (which Ariana refused to wear until she'd had time to have a blacksmith replace the symbol on it with the symbol of Mishra, her god), padded the orb in the wagon so it wouldn't break in transit, and headed on their way.
They were warned by a beat-up beggar of a man that a pack of bandits was blocking the bridge ahead, and robbing everyone of all their possessions as a 'tax'. The party decided to put Oshi in his armor and have him and the orb pose as 'cursed artifacts' that they were travelling to purify... but when they arrived, the bandits were in the process of attacking a group of hapless entertainers, so they had to just attack immediately.
The first couple bandits went down easily, while their scary looking leader stayed far out of range. The next two tried to take hostages, but the party wasn't going to let a little thing like the death of innocents stop them from continuing the fight...
Actually, Zatsuichi put away his sword (which he could quick draw again at will, but it made him look more harmless) and advanced to where he could ready an action to disarm the bandit holding one woman hostage if he moved to kill her, while Natsuki climbed over the side of the bridge and scampered through the wooden supports to get around behind the other one, planning to pounce on him from behind and kill him before he could react, but Ariana, Despero, and Oshi basically just kept on going trying to kill the enemies, and both hostages were killed (Zatsuichi's disarm failed).
Then they were *really* killed, as the leader let loose with a fireball, which also wounded some of his own men. The bandits fled, but none of them got far, and it was down to the party against the bandit leader, who was a giant rock-man.
His skin was incredibly tough, and only the strongest (or sneakiest) swings could chip away at the rock that made up his body -- especially once he enlarged himself to double his already massive size. Oshi tried to push him off the bridge, and *almost* succeeded, just as the bridge collapsed under the weight of the enlarged bandit and Oshi's green armor, burying the bandit under a huge pile of rubble at the bottom of the river, while the party floated down light as a feather, thanks to Felesse-Prime (Elaina) and Oshi's armor's hover unit.
Ariana cast a spell to let Oshi's armor fly, and the wagons and horses were ferried across the now-destroyed bridge. Oshi also ferried across the performers, who asked if the party's wagon could carry their dead. "Well, we weren't really lying about the cursed artifacts, but if you WANT to stack your friends' bodies by the evil necromantic orb, go right ahead..."
By nightfall, they reached the village. Ariana healed a wounded waif crying over a cut on her foot, which indebted the village elder to them (kinda). He led them right to the sister of the person they were trying to find, who explained that Leto was dead, killed when he was 12, and his adoptive family had moved away. The party decided that digging up the grave was the only thing to do, but they'd wait until morning (or at least, until their cleric had Speak With Dead ready).
The sister offered to let them stay the night, and they accepted -- although Despero decided to stay on patrol all night, and Zatsuichi 'slept' by the door, guarding it all night, and Oshi went back to the village to sleep with a whore.
Men!
During the night, they were attacked by a swarm of zombies -- all the villagers, with the same soulless eyes they recognized from Zatsuichi when his soul had been trapped in the orb! And Oshi was with them! The party started knocking the villagers unconscious with punches and kicks and such, tangling up Oshi with a tanglefoot bag so as not to have to hurt him even that much, while Felesse helped the sister lock all the doors and windows to keep the quasi-undead out... but before they could make much of a dent in the swarms, an evil witch revealed herself, hovering over the barn, holding a glowing orb!
The party rushed to attack the new threat, ignoring the useless zombies, but were hedged out by a Repulsion spell and couldn't get within 50 feet! Their options for ranged warfare proved to be limited, and most of them ended up throwing rocks. Despero threw rocks VERY HARD, causing a few nasty bruises before the witch put up a stone skin.
Araina could still hurt her, blasting her with two rays of searing light, infuriated by the rain of knives the witch had sent at the party, failing to harm them significantly but killing dozens of villager-zombies. Araina was also quite annoyed that this witch was none other than the naked bathing lady they'd saved a week or two back -- no good deed goes unpunished, and there she was, stuck in a class with actual penalties if you change alignment!
Finaly, Despero, frustrated at his impotence, smashed the orb with a thrown rock... and the villagers' souls were released! Then Araina finished summoning a fire mephit, which torched the witch with a scorching ray, finishing her off.
"Disappointing," the tatood shadow-mage said, stepping out of the shadows. "Humans are such frail creatures, so easy to kill when you set aside your scruples." The party tried to beat on him (aided greatly by Zatsuichi's ability to see right through his illusions), and at least managed to chase him away, then rested the rest of the night in something like peace.
And at least it hadn't been their orb they'd broken, as they'd originally thought -- the witch had had her own.
In the morning, the sister remebered that Leto had had a twin sister -- he *wasn't* the last hope after all. There was another. Back in their own kingdom. "Probably a scullery maid back in the palace kitchens, with our luck," Natsuki cynically muttered.
