Fish, etc.
Sep. 7th, 2003 09:16 pmSaturday, my sister Anna and her husband Alex took me out to eat so that they could give me a spare key so that I could get into their house to look after their animals if they were stuck in the hospital for an extended period of time when Anna had her baby, which should be happening any week now.
After exchanging 'so, where do you want to go?' I asked if there were any Red Lobsters in the area, since I was feeling vaguely nostalgic for semi-decent fried fish. It turns out there are some, although it's a bit of a drive -- maybe twenty minutes, if you don't miss the exit and go ten miles out of your way.
We didn't have a lot of current events to talk about... but we had factoids from various places to exchange, which passes for conversation nowadays. The chatter finally got around to Alex's family's former orange orchard in Florida, which they'd had to sell to his grandfather to cover their debts after all the trees died two years in a row, back in the 80s... and which he'd eventually sold for 34 million dollars to a developer.
Apparently, he (the grandfather) bought a huge almond plantation, but doesn't work the fields. Or live in the gigantic manor house, that has both twenty foot high rooms *and* two stories. He lives in the servant's quarters of the vast estate, which is still a huge-ass house.
I think I want to be that rich someday. }:P
Oh, as for the food, it was mostly the same as I remember, and while the fish was just 'okay' (I had fried catfish, which maybe wasn't the best choice, although it wasn't *bad*) the side dishes were all excellent. They didn't serve hushpuppies anymore (Noooooo!) but the complimentary bread was buttery and garlicky and just generally tasty... I could have eaten an unlimited amount of it, but, fortunately, the waitress forgot to refill the basket after telling us she would.
