It's a trap! Well, duh.

So, we had a session of Tom's D+D game today. Mostly just finishing off the adventure we started last time, against our will.

There wasn't anything else in the barracks section, so they had to head out of the secret areas and back towards the large two-section chamber which Rhiannon was sure held the enemy. As they approached, Zanzibar was sent ahead with potions of sneaking and invisibility to scout out the room.

The room initially appeared to be empty, but tripwires were spread throughout the room up far enough for a flyer to hit them, and the scouting warlock didn't spot them in time to keep from setting them off. Luckily, all they did was sound an alarm and light up some lanterns... but the party took the commotion as a sign to rush into the room, even though they still didn't know where the enemy was.

The enemy did waste a few fireballs at basically nothing, since the second person to enter the room (Raiina) was also invisible (thanks to another potion) and they didn't see any targets. Eventually one hit its mark, but everyone was protected from fire (except Zanzibar, but he was continuing to scout the room invisibly).

It took a while, but eventually they figured out that the enemy was up on a ledge to the right of the entryway, in the shadow of all the newly lit lanterns from traps that were set off (mostly by fireballs). Zanzibar shouted this to the party, and was immediately assassinated. Unsuccesfully.

The two assassins played with the party members who couldn't jump up onto the ledge, while Zanzibar and Raiina and Morgan assaulted the mage who seemed to be in charge. Zanzibar spotted and shattered a mirror that was disguising his true location, and the mage made his demand -- hand over the morningstar or the brother gets it! Rhiannon didn't bother to respond. The enemy fighter made a more immediate demand -- for Raiina to put down her bow and cease her advance, or he'd kill her brother. Raiina [also controlled by Eric] completely ignored this demand.

So, they killed her brother. This did distract them long enough for the party to successfully assault them and kill most of them... and the ones on the ground took out the assassins handily enough. It was close -- Samuel and Morgan were both almost killed... and they had to run away as the enemy revealed their Super Secret Ace in the Hole -- a steel predator!

Of course, the *enemy* was closer to it than the *party*, and got eaten first, which gave the party time to grab the dead bodies and run for their lives.

As they left the caves with the very, very dead body of Raiina's brother, Zanzibar reflected on how this had all been a collosal waste of time.

last session | next session

Basically, any potential for roleplaying or drama was eliminated by Eric's outright refusal to even for a second consider doing anything to prioritize rescuing the hostage over killing the enemy. This after he forced us to all come in the first place! Grrr.
