Welcome Home

Friday night, we started a new campaign, playing Mutants and Masterminds. The party met up on a skyscraper, then moved into their new apartment.

Fractal was a juvenile delinquent who happened to have superpowers. Light-based superpowers. She thought that this made her incredibly intelligent, but was too lazy to actually prove or disprove any of that. Her mother, a local politician, pulled strings to get her into the New Superhero Initiative as a publicity stunt, and to keep her from doing anything embarassing locally.

Morph was less delinqent and a little more juvenile. She invented a super-game-player that transformed her into various heroes and heroines from the ancient comic books and anime that were coming back into style as humanity on New Avalon celebrated its freedom from Chrrrrkt dominion by mining its past for genuinely human culture. She was signed up by her brother, and selected because she seemed especially photogenic.

Pocket Fluff was the 'protege' of the old Pocket Fluff, from the previous Young Superhero Initiative. CONTROL, of course, knew that they were actually the same person, and made sure that he was included just as she had been, in her turn. His experience would no doubt prove crucial in getting the most out of the team.

Liquid Fist was the team's token Maurian, at least according to the NETWORK news anchors -- from the continent on the far side of the world. Regardless, he'd signed up of his own free will and been selected fairly.

They were all flown to the CONTROL tower in Spectrum city -- a giant glowing purple skyscraper, one of six (the others glowed different colors). Spectrum city was spread out beneath them, neighborhoods and buildings glowing according to the color of the guild that their inhabitants aligned themselves with at the moment. Too much of the city glowed red, the color of HAZARD, the guild dedicated to chaos and villainy (and sports, which was its original purpose).

There was supposed to be a fifth member of the team, but Flamboyance's flyer didn't arrive. Eventually, they were taken to a very boring official dinner (with horrible fancy food -- Pocket Fluff tried to summon a pizza, but got a pizza-shaped squeaky toy instead), then given purple eyedrops to mark them as agents of CONTROL.

CONTROL informed them that it had purchased the team's old headquarters for their use, and called a cab to take them there. Unfortunately, what had once been an isolated hidden base in the middle of the countryside was now located in the middle of a red warehouse district. CONTROL informed them that this was unexpected -- the neighborhood had been yellow (meaning run by TREASURE, in charge of commerce and therefore most warehouses) when it had purchased the property that morning. But, at any rate, part of the team's mission was to spready CONTROL's influence by setting a good example for the populace, so starting in a red district wasn't so bad.

Kind of spooky, maybe.

Liquidfist opened the door, and got wrapped up in a big black tentacle and sucked into the darkened interior of the building.

Fractal lit up the place so that they could see what was going on. What was going on was more tentacles, basically. Liquid broke out, but then got wrapped up again along with PocketFluff, and sucked into the room where more, smaller tentacles molested them. Morph morphed into Starfire, and then she and Fractal started blasting the tentacles from a distance while Liquid and Pocket struggled to stay conscious, somewhat unsuccesfully. But eventually Starfire got impatient and just blew everything up, scorching the street and her friends, but taking out most of the tentacles she could see. Then she proceeded through the building, with Fractal opening each door remotely so that she could explode again and blow them up. She cleared three rooms before missing a tentacle and getting somewhat molested...

Liquid wasn't Liquid anymore, by the way -- when he fell unconscious he turend into 'MetalDefender', a robot-like person with electric powers instead of stretchy punching stuff. Of course, later on Metal got knocked out and woke up as Liquid again...

So Pocket Fluff and Fractal decided that the main badguy was probably in the old control room. Morph and Pocket were able to look through the walls and verify that there were some forms other than tentacles -- bats and a weird tentacle with a mouth, coming out of the main computer system. Pocket Fluff came up with a plan -- Fractal would use her very accurate autofire attack on the bats, while the rest focused fire on the mouth.

It worked pretty well, overall -- Fractal was eventually able to get all the bats, although not before one blinded Pocket Fluff for a bit, and all the people shooting at the mouth made sure that it stayed stunned for the entire fight -- it was much MUCH tougher than the other tentacles, but it never acctually got to act. After it was defeated, everything dissolved and the base was back to just being deserted.

Morph turned into Batman and investigated further -- she found a text file that basically said 'welcome home, from HAZARD' and an address where the computer-invasion part of the invasion had come from... it was about a mile off, but that was a long way in the city and deep in the red zone, so she didn't go running off to try to follow the trail further.

CONTROL identified the attacker as Tenebra, a low ranking 'supervillain' working for HAZARD. It issued the party with an official warrant for her arrest -- they did have open permission to hunt down and bring in HAZARD supervillains, but a warrant would make it easier to get other guilds to cooperate.
