A slight change of plans
So, we had a session of the GURPS game. I decided to do something different, because among other things I wanted to resolve whether or not Kitten was dead. One of the other things that was among was that I was tired of having them go up against the same stupid totem barrier. Although it looks like they might go right up against it again...
John and Don decided to hide from the enemies inside the mist surrounding the center. When they heard the enemy approaching, they hatched a clever plan to follow them inside by disguising themselves in the armor from one of the dead soldiers... but unfortuantely they forgot to give John any way of finding his way through the mist, and he got lost... and even more unfortunately, the enemy (or at least, the enemy mages) were able to see through *this* mist just fine, even though they (or at least, their foot soldiers) hadn't been able to see throug the ordinary mist outside.
So Don ended up charmed and captured... but his endless distracting nattering kept the mage escorting him back to their camp from noticing as John attached himself to the retinue. He was going to be interrogated at length, but before the enemy could get around to that, a messenger came from their superior officers in this world ordering them to stop whatever they were doing in the chasm that was causing the hurricane, and move their forces back to base immediately.
The mage responded, of course, by telling the truth, about magic and mages and how they'd come from another world... so the messenger left convinced that he was insane. He convinced Don to fix up their tanks (and by 'fix' I of course mean 'turn on') so that they could leave chasing after Kitten... but before they got very far, they were surrounded by this world's mechanized military and taken into custody. Don and John both managed to get mistaken for enemy guards this time...
Meanwhile, Kitten woke up in a laboratory near a couple dead bodies... apparently, doctors who were going to dissect him to see how he could float in midair. The mage who'd captured him, according to the notes, was undergoing psychiatric counselling for his own claims of magical powers. Kitten cast a see-through-walls spell to see if anyone was in the rooms nearby, and they were... but he spotted Don off in the waiting room where the guards wre waiting to be debreifed, and made himself Insignificant so that he could get over there.
Don, of course, saw him immediately. They talked and compared notes, and eventually decided to teleport back to the chasm and continue their invasion, even if there were probably still enemies entrenched. But thier teleport went awry, and they ended up standing in the middle of a field with two of the guards. The guards recognized Kitten -- or at least, one of them managed to see through the insignificance now that Kitten had just teleported them to the middle of nowhere -- but they were quickly dispatched, being no match for John's swordplay or Kitten's magic.
At that point, a mysterious bluish person appeared, having been looking for them for several days, and finally finding them (a) not inside a totem-barrier, and (b) alone. He warned them that the world had been 'broken', and then overstressed by being forced to go through such extreme changes that the majority of inhabitants were fake, and that they'd need to leave unless they wanted to end up as crazy people living in their own imaginary world, as it was in danger of becoming entirely fictional.
When asked how to tell if someone is fake, he recommended looking at someone's history and comparing it to their memories. If they matched, they were probably fake. Kitten and John found this reassuring.
At any rate, they decided to transport themselves back to John and Don's homeworld ('Industrial Athens') to continue their mission. Unfortuantely, they only got halfway there (as (a) the spell went wild again and (b) it was extra hard to get to that world and Kitten didn't make the extra effort).
But, from between, they could see what was up -- and apparently, it was not good. There were dead bodies everywhere -- black people, indians, and white women, mostly. They found a burned out farm where one of the women had been impaled, and Kitten tried to speak with her spirit... and accidentally brought her back from the dead. Well, that works.
After being taken off the stake and healed, she told about how monsters had come and killed all the men... clouds of gas falling over the cities with the same effect... how the people who hadn't been killed (the women, and the non-white males) had started arguing about who was supposed to be in charge. Then fighting. And about how Athens itself was a cursed town that everyone was staying way the hell away from it.
